BOE Technology Group has announced the plan to build its first Gen-8.6 OLED production facility in Chengdu. The construction phase of this plant is estimated to span approximately 34 months, with a total investment of 63 billion RMB (or about 9 billion USD). This facility is designed to output 32,000 glass substrates (size 2290mm x 2620mm) every month, supplying high-end OLED displays for laptops and tablets.
This project is tailored to meet the soaring demand for IT OLED displays and is expected to accelerate the industry’s growth into mid-size products. Following BOE’s successful launch of several Gen-6 flexible AMOLED production lines, this new venture represents another technological leap, cementing BOE’s position as a leader in the OLED sector.
The Gen-8.6 AMOLED production line can accommodate larger substrates, enhance cutting efficiency for mid-size displays, and reduce production costs. Employing cutting-edge technology, the line promises lower power consumption and extended lifespan.
Consumer demand for lighter, more portable laptops and tablets drives innovation towards flexible, foldable, and freeform devices, opening vast market opportunities for mid-size OLED displays. According to Omdia, OLED laptop panel shipments are expected to reach 6 million units in 2022, a 19% increase year-over-year. DSCC forecasts that by 2026, OLEDs will dominate 75% of the high-end IT market, with a compound annual growth rate of 51%, reaching 44 million units.
Since launching China’s first 6th generation flexible OLED line, BOE has been a frontrunner in the global OLED industry. The construction of the Gen-8.6 OLED line is set to elevate the display industry once again. BOE remains committed to leading the display technology advancement and promoting a healthy, green, and sustainable growth.
